My previous post on managing creativity talked about letting go when you get mentally ‘stuck’ on a creative project. Michael Mann at 43folders elaborates on ways to get unstuck with his post on “Whining, White Smoke & the Mechanics of Getting Unstuck.” I can see some of their ideas helping with a creative challenge, but, they are mostly antidotes for procrastination.
Still, I’ve found his second tip — solving problems by writing a note to yourself — to be a creativity-saver many times. When you write to yourself you can get silly and nonsensical. Sometimes, those creative ideas lurking in the far corners of your mind are just hiding from the rigidity of conventional mediums they’ll be subjected to on the outside.
